Andre and Lu had never planned to own a diner. When the opportunity arose to transition from being employees to being entrepreneurs, they stepped in. Initially they faced steep learning curves as they balanced operations with the new responsibilities of ownership. “In the beginning it was crazy,” says Andre, “but we believed in the idea, in ourselves, and in our work.”
Their commitment to Walter’s Diner has paid off. The eatery has established itself as a popular venue with a diverse customer base, creating a community hub defined by inclusivity, human connection, and a modern approach to growth. The entire business runs on the belief in people first, and brings the saying “good food, good mood” to every smashburger, sandwich, or pancake they fry up.
The Digital Integration Payoff
For Walter’s Diner, seamless digital interactions reinforce the same warmth and attentiveness that define its in-person service. From the start, the diner relied on digital systems to handle both in-store and online transactions. Over time, they consolidated all payment and order management onto one digital platform. “Having everything integrated in one platform optimizes our work,” says Lu, “it makes life easier for us and for our staff.”
Digital payments now account for over 90% of their transactions. Speed of settlement, integration across sales channels and ease of use were all decisive factors in the transition. “Square deposits funds almost the next day. That helps cash flow a lot. For a small business, that makes all the difference,” Andre notes.
Walter’s Diner also uses Square’s website builder, another example of digital integration. “On our old platform, we could only display a basic menu,” Lu explained. Now, “we can use pictures, colors, and really showcase our brand. The experience for customers is much better.” The fresh branding, as well as the seamless experience of using an integrated system, matters in an industry where customer touchpoints extend beyond the physical store.
Digital Tools for Growth & Preservation
“Expansion is our next step,” Lu told us. “The first diner has validated our idea, now we want to see what Walter’s can become as a brand.” Andre and Lu are exploring both a second location and longer-term brand building opportunities. Digital payments will remain central as the pair prepares for this next move.
Confidence in digital compliance and data protections support their willingness to expand. Andre emphasized: “Because we feel safe using the platform, we feel confident to grow.”
For the founders, growth isn’t just about scale, but preserving the culture of respect and human connection. “For us, everyone is welcome. We respect people. We value their work, their lives. That’s the main idea of who we are,” Lu explained. Andre concluded, “digital tools like Square help us make that possible by keeping operations smooth and cash flow stable.” Walter’s Diner shows how leveraging digital tools can connect people with good eats and each other.
