CHARLOTTE, NC – Hua Wang, Executive Director of the Global Innovation Forum, delivered remarks at the UK–US SME Dialogue focused on the commercialization of innovative technologies. Drawing on her experience as a former founder and her role in supporting entrepreneurs in startup accelerators, Wang emphasized the critical need for greater access to capital, public-private partnerships, and simplified compliance processes for small businesses operating in global markets.
Wang spotlighted the barriers entrepreneurs face—from complex tax codes and fragmented regulations to lack of commercialization support for early-stage technologies. “Startups need more than just encouragement—they need practical support, clear pathways to capital, and a seat at the policy table,” Wang said. She underscored the importance of soft landing programs and applauded the UK and US’s leadership in offering proactive government resources, including grant advisors and global trade support.
Highlighting best practices from the U.S. and UK, Wang called for deeper cooperation on innovation and digital trade, and urged policymakers to reduce red tape, harmonize regulatory standards, and expand initiatives like SBIR grants and tax credits for investors and faculty-led research spinouts.
As head of GIF, Wang advocates for policies that enable small businesses to grow, go global, and go digital. “When startups succeed, our economies and communities thrive,” she noted.
