Darren Black, Founder and CEO of Prosperety Technologies, is transforming the financial landscape for small businesses and consumers. Based in San Francisco, his company is an AI-enabled SaaS platform that transforms everyday retail purchases into interest-free cash advances, providing consumers immediate access to the money they’ve spent. By incentivizing consumer engagement and utilizing digital advertising revenue, Prosperety aims to alleviate consumer debt and enhance financial health.
Building with Precision: A Technological Edge
Black attributes the success of Prosperety Technologies to the technical expertise of his team. “I have a very technical team, and that makes life a lot easier. I can articulate what I want and they build it with precision,” he explains. His approach to product development goes beyond ideation—he actively designs and details the features and workflow, ensuring the team shares a clear vision.
Prosperety’s use of digital tools doesn’t stop with efficient product development. The company’s AI-based platform is designed to tackle core issues that both small businesses and consumers face, focusing on financial literacy, access to credit, and business failure rates. Black highlights this dual approach: “We’ve created solutions for all the key reasons why businesses are failing, and we’re addressing consumers’ struggles with credit and finances. We have a full product roadmap, rolling out solutions that no one else is even thinking about.”
Public and Private Sector Collaboration
“AWS has been a huge help,” he notes. “They run seminars, offer discounts, and provide space for growth and collaboration.” Black also highlights the assistance received from Mercury Bank, which has been instrumental in supporting their financial operations.
“I’ve been through five accelerators,” he notes. These programs, including StreetCode Academy, LogIn, Capital Ventures, and Renaissance, have offered essential training and resources. “Each accelerator taught me something new and helped refine our business model,” Black says. He also mentions a recent program backed by the city of San Francisco, which selected the most innovative companies in the city to receive specialized training. “These experiences have been invaluable in shaping Prosperety’s growth strategy,” he concludes.
Shaping Policy: The Role of Stakeholders
“Implementing a digital services tax is a terrible idea,” says Black. “It would seriously limit companies’ ability to expand internationally. The idea of taxing data transfers between countries just doesn’t make sense—it’s counterproductive. If the tax is too high, many companies, especially smaller ones, simply wouldn’t be able to afford it, and they could end up going out of business. This kind of policy is not only impractical, but it would also stifle growth and innovation.”
Black’s insights on AI policy resonate with a call for thoughtful regulation. As AI frameworks are taking shape globally, he recommends that the U.S. draw lessons from the EU while listening to domestic AI experts. “AI is simply code,” he explains. “If policymakers want to regulate, they need to do so in a way that prevents misuse without stifling innovation.”
He advocates for policies created with active participation from key stakeholders, including small businesses and consumers. “The policymakers should invite stakeholders who have a lot more to lose with bad policy decisions,” he asserts. Black also suggests having an AI Czar—a trusted expert to guide committees in crafting policies that balance innovation with regulation.
Safeguarding Innovations: Protecting Intellectual Property
As a technology entrepreneur, Black is keenly aware of the importance of protecting trade secrets. He explains that Prosperety has its own “secret sauce” when it comes to its platform, which he guards vigilantly. This concern extends to the notion of mandatory disclosure of source codes to governments, which he finds troubling. “Who knows what guarantees there are that someone on the inside won’t leak it?” he questions, emphasizing the risks of such policies.
A Vision for Prosperety: Revolutionizing Finance
Black envisions Prosperety as a key driver in breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle for consumers and reducing the failure rate of small businesses. The company is working on a tax credit strategy to further aid small businesses, which, if implemented, could solidify Prosperety’s market position.
Black is fueled by a long-term vision: “I think five years ahead. The strategy is aligned, and everything fits. If we execute as planned, Prosperety will be a force to be reckoned with.”
