In today’s fast-paced financial world, where market information is often dominated by elite institutions, The Practical Investors, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is changing the game by giving everyday traders a voice. Founded as a stock information platform by Matt Cline and Jordan Lanham, The Practical Investors democratizes the flow of stock market insights, enabling users to share their opinions and monetize their knowledge, whether they’re seasoned traders or newcomers.

“Our goal is to commercialize stock opinions and allow people to essentially become their own bloggers or financial analysts,” explains Cline.  “They can post their predictions, share insights, and track their performance, creating a transparent marketplace of ideas.”

Leveraging Digital Technologies

The Practical Investors app is built on a foundation of digital tools designed to enhance user experience and decision-making. The company’s integration of AI helps refine the quality of content users generate. As Lanham explains, “AI is integrated to provide feedback on user posts. It helps traders make informed decisions by highlighting news or trends they might have missed, which ultimately improves the quality of predictions shared on the platform.”

This AI-powered feature aims to create an environment where traders can learn from each other while maintaining a level of professionalism in their content. “We want to yield better, smarter trading decisions, while still giving people the freedom to express their opinions,” Lanham adds.

In terms of infrastructure, The Practical Investors relies on leading global technology providers.  “AWS has been incredible for us. Their web hosting services allow us to scale efficiently, which is crucial as we continue expanding internationally,” Lanham notes.

“We also utilize Meta’s platforms, including Facebook ads and Instagram reels and ads, as part of our marketing strategy.  We’re hosted on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, which provide us with free analytics tools. These tools allow us to track performance, monitor how customers are engaging with our app, and gain valuable insights. This data helps us continuously refine our product and optimize how we reach and engage users through our marketing efforts,” adds Cline.

Expanding to International Markets

While The Practical Investors was initially designed with U.S.-based traders in mind, the app has gained traction in international markets. Cline shares one of their recent milestones: “Last month, we saw one of our biggest days of downloads coming from Poland, which really highlighted the global potential of our platform. Our system is designed to work for traders anywhere.”

What sets The Practical Investors apart is its universal appeal. Users don’t have to be actively trading on the U.S. stock market to benefit from the platform. “Our app doesn’t require you to be a trader on a specific market. You can be anywhere in the world, sign in, make predictions, and potentially earn a profit, all without risking your own money,” Lanham emphasizes.

Navigating Policy and International Business Challenges

As a company operating in the digital finance space, The Practical Investors faces its fair share of regulatory and policy challenges. Lanham and Cline have insights into the evolving landscape of AI and data regulations, particularly as governments worldwide grapple with how to regulate these emerging technologies.

“There’s a delicate balance when it comes to AI regulation,” Lanham says. “On one hand, we need governance to prevent misuse, but on the other hand, overregulation can stifle innovation. For us, AI is key to helping traders make smarter decisions, so we hope that policymakers strike the right balance.”

Cline expresses concerns about data localization laws, which require companies to store data within the country where it is generated. “Data localization could be a significant barrier for startups like ours, especially when expanding internationally. Having to set up local data servers in every country would be costly and could limit our ability to reach new markets,” he explains.

Another challenge is the growing trend of digital service taxes, where countries propose taxing the transfer of digital data across borders. “Taxes on data transfers could hurt our ability to scale internationally,” Lanham warns. “Small businesses like ours would have to raise costs, which could make it harder to compete with bigger players.”

“The more regulations and fees we face, the more it impacts our ability to grow and expand,” says Cline.  “Every additional cost—whether it’s taxes or other obligations—forces us to raise prices just to maintain the same profit margins, which ultimately limits our reach. For startups and small businesses, these added costs can be a major obstacle. They could hold us back from reaching our full potential.”

Despite these hurdles, Cline and Lanham remain optimistic. The company received a grant from the Ohio Third Frontier Program, which helped it scale during its early stages. “Without that grant, the road would have been much longer. The resources they provided, from office space to legal connections, were invaluable,” Cline says.

Looking Ahead

Looking to the future, the cofounders are excited about expanding The Practical Investors’ reach and continuing to provide a platform for everyday traders around the globe. “We’re on the cutting edge of something big,” Lanham says. “We want to help people grow their financial knowledge and succeed in trading—whether they’re experienced or just starting out. And we’re proud to do that in a way that’s accessible and risk-free.”

With a digital infrastructure and a growing international user base, The Practical Investors is well-positioned to thrive in the rapidly changing world of digital finance. As Lanham and Cline continue to navigate both technological advancements and international policy challenges, their mission remains clear: to democratize financial information and empower everyday traders worldwide.
