New research and survey data highlight how digital payment systems unlock opportunity, and what’s needed from policymakers to support small businesses globally
Washington, D.C. — The Global Innovation Forum (GIF), with support from Block, today announced the release of Digital Payments, Global Growth: Unlocking Opportunities for Small Businesses, a new report examining how digital payment systems are enabling small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to grow, compete, and operate across borders.
The report draws on a global survey of more than 1,000 SMBs and insights from entrepreneurs across multiple regions, offering a data-driven and human-centered view of how digital payments are reshaping business operations, from improving cash flow to expanding access to global markets.
“Small businesses are at the center of economic growth,” said Hua Wang, Executive Director of the Global Innovation Forum. “This report highlights how digital payments are enabling their journeys, and what policymakers and industry leaders can do to ensure they can fully participate in the global economy.”
SMBs represent 90% of businesses worldwide and more than half of global employment, making their ability to access efficient, secure financial tools critical to broader economic resilience and growth.

- Improving interoperability across platforms and borders,
